SCONDA Project Closure Event

Today, the SCONDA consortium gathered at VodafoneThree’s headquarters in Greenpark to celebrate the successful completion of the Small Cells ORAN in Dense Areas (SCONDA) project. This landmark initiative delivered the UK’s first dense urban Open RAN small cell deployment in Glasgow city centre — proving that Open RAN can be effectively integrated into live brownfield networks to enhance capacity, diversify the supply chain, and accelerate digital inclusion.

As the consortium lead, AWTG has driven the programme’s coordination, systems integration, and technical delivery — continuing its commitment to advance Open RAN and future networks in the UK and beyond. SCONDA’s impact has already been recognised through award shortlists and has been showcased at major industry events, including Connected Britain and Mobile World Congress Barcelona where the project stood as an example of UK-led telecoms innovation.

At the closure event, partners reflected on achievements and lessons learned. We proudly acknowledge the technological leadership of VodafoneThree UK, the valued support of Scotland 5G Centre, and the contributions of Accenture, Freshwave, Mavenir, PI Works, University of Glasgow, and University of Surrey.

We extend our thanks to Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) for their support throughout the project. While SCONDA formally closes today, its outcomes will continue to inspire innovation in Open RAN deployment, smart city infrastructure, and resilient, future-ready networks both in the UK and internationally.
