AWTG is Delighted to be Part of CORE Project at Cambridge Tech Week

AWTG FlexRAN

AWTG team is thrilled to announce its presence at Cambridge Tech Week, where they are proudly participating as one of the consortium partners and the technical lead of the CORE (Cambridgeshire Open RAN Ecosystem) project. At the event, innovative 5G Open RAN technology was showcased in the Innovation Alley of the Cambridge Corn Exchange, previewing cutting-edge advancements including AWTG’s FlexRAN, a transformative innovation on  mobile network capabilities through Private Network Solutions.

The CORE project, spearheaded by Connecting Cambridgeshire on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council with AWTG as the project’s technical authority, is a collaborative effort to develop and trial a 5G Open RAN mobile network capable of meeting the demands of high data usage environments. The initiative brings together a diverse consortium of telecoms, data, and use-case experts to create and test a multi-vendor 5G Open RAN platform that significantly enhances mobile capacity in dense, high-traffic areas.

Urban centres and major events often struggle with inadequate mobile networks, unable to support data-intensive applications or a large number of simultaneous users. The CORE project aims to tackle this challenge head-on by delivering a multi-vendor 5G Open RAN platform designed to provide robust and reliable mobile connectivity in such demanding environments.

Funded by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology’s Open Networks Ecosystem competition, CORE is one of 19 national initiatives demonstrating the potential of Open RAN technology. By leveraging standardised components from various companies, Open RAN encourages competition and innovation, heralding a more flexible and cost-effective future for mobile networks.

The consortium of partners, including AWTG, Benetel, Cambridgeshire County Council, Gooii, Ontix, Wolfram, and the University of Surrey, are collectively working towards harnessing next-generation technology to deliver a neutral host platform. This platform aims to support multiple network operators, ensuring consistent and high-quality mobile connectivity even in high-demand scenarios.

The preview at Cambridge Tech Week marks a significant milestone for the CORE project, showcasing the tangible advancements and collaborative efforts driving the future of mobile connectivity.
