AWTG Ltd is proud to announce its appointment as the technology and delivery partner for the groundbreaking £3.8 million 5G project across the Borderlands region, spanning the south of Scotland and the north of England. The initiative, funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), will significantly boost connectivity at five key tourism sites, helping to transform digital infrastructure across both nations.
This pivotal project, known as the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region Programme, marks a significant milestone in the enhancement of wireless coverage and smart technology deployment in scenic, touristic and rural areas. AWTG’s role will involve delivering advanced wireless technology and infrastructure in visitor locations, including The Crook Inn on the Destination Tweed trail, Kielder Castle, Stranraer Marina, The Sill near Hadrian’s Wall, and Windermere Ferry.
With its extensive experience in delivering cutting-edge digital solutions, AWTG is poised to transform the Borderlands region’s connectivity, empowering local communities and bolstering the tourism sector.
CEO of AWTG, Abbey Alidoosti, stated, “With AWTG at the forefront of this project, we are not only enhancing connectivity but also fostering sustainable tourism and growth across these scenic regions. This programme exemplifies our commitment to bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas.”
AWTG has a distinguished history of driving innovation, having deployed the UK’s first 5G testbed in 2014. As the technology and delivery partner, AWTG aims to build a future-proof infrastructure that will ensure robust digital access across the Borderlands, supporting services, safeguarding workers, enhancing communities and driving new service development for visitors and locals alike. The enhanced connectivity will also play a crucial role in environmental monitoring and safeguarding the region’s natural beauty.
A Vision for the Future
The Borderlands 5G Innovation Region Programme is part of a wider effort to modernise the region’s infrastructure. AWTG’s involvement signals a new era of connectivity, where digital infrastructure supports innovation, sustainable growth, and inclusivity. AWTG’s expertise in 5G network deployment and advanced technology solutions will help make the Borderlands a flagship area for digital transformation in the UK.
Deployment work has already begun, and the selected locations are expected to benefit from the new 5G infrastructure by early next year.
