AWTG Leads the Next Technical Phase of the ONE CORE HDD Network

AWTG Ltd, is proud to announce the latest progress in the ONE CORE HDD Network project, building on the strong foundation set out in its collaboration on the UK’s 5G Open RAN initiative. This update marks the transition from initial testing to live operations, with the network now fully activated and performing at full capacity.

Since AWTG’s involvement in the ONE CORE HDD project, the focus has been on developing an advanced 5G Open RAN neutral host platform for High Demand Density (HDD) areas. The initial success of the lab-based tests has now led to the activation of the network, with outstanding results in performance, throughput, and system integration. This marks a key milestone in demonstrating the potential of Open RAN to revolutionise mobile networks in dense areas.

AWTG’s technical leadership continues to drive the project forward. The team has successfully delivered high-performance indoor network systems and is now focused on stabilising and scaling the outdoor network, which is scheduled for completion by the last quarter of 2024. This work, alongside ongoing collaborations with partners like Capgemini, ensures the network meets the highest standards expected by the UK government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

Next Steps

With the network live, AWTG’s efforts now turn to integrating advanced solutions such as SCAP, RIC, and demonstrating real-world use cases. The project is progressing from lab systems to live environments, and AWTG’s team is ensuring these innovations translate into practical benefits. Their work continues to reflect the UK government’s commitment to Open RAN, aiming to diversify the telecoms supply chain and meet the ambitious target of handling 35% of the UK’s mobile traffic by 2030.

As AWTG leads in the next technical stages, the team remains focused on delivering a commercially viable solution that offers both business and reputational advantages. AWTG is confident that its continued efforts will solidify the UK’s position as a technical leader in 5G Open RAN technology.
