April 9, 2025 – AWTG is proud to announce a significant milestone in the Borderlands 5G Innovation Programme with the successful deployment of the Windermere 5G network, now officially live! Spearheaded by the AWTG team in collaboration with Borderlands, this cutting-edge 5G network achieved a remarkable download speed, using a satellite backhaul, showcasing the impressive capabilities of AWTG solution in providing high-speed connectivity to remote areas even without the availability of a fibre infrastructure. This achievement underscores AWTG’s expertise in delivering transformative connectivity solutions that pave the way for innovation and sustainable development in the region.
The AWTG team played a pivotal role on-site, completing the seamless integration of state-of-the-art IoT devices, including AI-powered solutions for environmental and security monitoring. These advanced devices are designed to track vital environmental factors such as air and water quality, temperature, turbidity, nitrogen dioxide levels, and pH. It also contributes to monitoring visitor numbers, car park occupancy, and water levels across key locations. The valuable data collected is visualised on AWTG’s data platform, offering actionable insights through detailed graphs, charts and analysis. With AWTG’s effort, this milestone is set to not only enhance the local tourism sector but also provide new tools for improving environmental sustainability and visitor experience, showcasing AWTG’s commitment to driving forward-thinking solutions for the future.

The Connecting Cumbria team works on behalf of Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council to deliver the Cumbria Digital Infrastructure Strategy for fixed line and mobile broadband with the aim that no one and no place will be left behind. As part of Cumbria’s commitment to the Borderlands Partnership the Connecting Cumbria team will lead delivery of the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region Programme on behalf of the Partnership.
