December 1, 2024 – AWTG, in collaboration with the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region team, showcased cutting-edge wireless technology at the Glebe Park Christmas Market. This ambitious project, bolstered by a £36 million grant from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), aims to improve wireless connectivity and digital technology use across the UK.
During the event, AWTG team introduced the Borderlands Project to visitors and explained its role within it. Present from AWTG were Greg Mordon, Programme Manager of the Borderlands Project; Omar Gaye; Senior Solutions Architect; and Desmond Nwanugo, Scrum Master and Senior Business Analyst for AWTG where they demonstrated how the advanced wireless technology can significantly improve the tourism industry in the Borderlands by offering real-time connectivity and innovative applications soon to be implemented in the region. AWTG also provided free Wi-Fi, connecting people with their point-of-sale (POS) systems. The feedback was positive, with many noting that sales via the Wi-Fi using the POS were very quick and stable.
Additionally, AWTG showcased a CCTV people-counting application, which tallied approximately 2,000 visitors in the market within a span of 5 hours and 30 minutes, assuring the community as well that no video footage was being recorded. The team illustrated the application’s functionality, explaining how reports can be produced and the data effectively utilised. This presentation offered attendees a clear understanding of how the application can be beneficially employed by local authorities and for various events. Attending the event has enabled visitors to grasp the project’s objective and appreciate the advantages of this DSIT initiative for the Borderlands Region.
The project focuses on revitalising the Borderlands by deploying 5G technology across five key locations, with AWTG serving as the technical delivery partner. Representatives from AWTG and the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region were available throughout the event to answer questions and highlight the benefits of this cutting-edge technology.
The impact of 5G technology on the tourism sector is expected to be substantial. Visitors can anticipate seamless connectivity, augmented reality experiences, and personalised travel services, all designed to enhance the visitor experience and attract more tourists to the area.
The Glebe Park Christmas Market was bustling, with over 60 stalls offering a variety of delicacies, handmade crafts, and delicious snacks. The celebrations included carol singing with Santa and Mrs Claus, a circus skills workshop conducted by jesters, and a meeting with the Grinch. We are deeply appreciative of everyone who visited and took the time to learn about our innovations.
Councillor Peter Thornton, Champion for Digital Infrastructure, Westmorland and Furness, said: “There is a real excitement around the work being carried out under the 5G Innovations Programme and the benefits this technology can bring to the residents, businesses and visitors of the Digital Borderlands area. Glebe Park Christmas Market was a great opportunity for the delivery team to talk to potential users about how 5G technology can support our area. I would like to thank the event organisers for their hospitality and hope all involved will agree this was a huge success.”
Greg Mordon, AWTG’s Programme Manager for the 5GIR Project shares “It was a pleasure to visit the Glebe Christmas Market and connect with the vibrant local community! We shared valuable insights about the Borderlands Project, highlighting its benefits and long-term impact on the region.
The event also offered a fantastic opportunity to showcase our advanced network capabilities in action. We successfully demonstrated and tested a real-life people counting use case, illustrating innovative ways to enhance event management and community planning through technology.
A big thank you to everyone who engaged with us and contributed to this meaningful day!”
